Frequently asked questions

Does File Inspector upload my files?

No. Type detection, hashing and metadata reading all run in your browser, so your file never leaves your device.

What is a hash for?

A hash is a short fingerprint of a file's exact contents. If the SHA-256 you compute matches the one published by the site you downloaded from, the file wasn't altered or corrupted along the way.

What does 'real type' mean?

File names can be changed freely, so File Inspector reads the first bytes of the file to identify its actual format. A JPEG renamed to .heic is still detected as a JPEG and flagged.
